Simply Charlotte Mason vs AmblesideOnline
AmblesideOnline is free lists you assemble. Simply Charlotte Mason is paid guides that tell you which page to open. Both are Christian. Neither is what most schools in this directory adopt.
Cost
AO's plans cost nothing. You still buy or borrow books. A careful library year can stay under $100 in new purchases. A buy-it-all year is several hundred dollars in used and new copies.
SCM sells the schedule. Enrichment Studies, Volume 1 is $17.95–$24.95. A history teacher guide in the current Pageant of History series is typically $22.95–$32.95. One Individual Studies guide per grade is $16.95–$24.95. The resources those guides assume — picture study, music study, habit books, nature journals — are the rest of the cart. A full year of new SCM materials is about $380. Prices checked 2026-09-06.
Free shipping on USA orders of $129. Returns window 60 days (checked 2026-09-06).
Faith framing
Both are Christian. AO's community is broad-evangelical with advisory notes. SCM's hymn study, scripture cards, and Bible history are built into the daily page. If you need a secular feast, neither is the product; look at Wildwood.
Prep time
AO asks you to build the week from the list, pull library holds, and decide substitutions. That is the work. SCM prints the week. You still gather the books. Open-and-go does not mean the box includes every spine.
School or co-op readiness
AO for Groups allows a physical co-op that charges no curriculum fee. SCM sells Charlotte Mason Together as a co-op product. Schools in this directory that name a published curriculum overwhelmingly name Alveary, not AO or SCM. Family products and school products are different markets.
A wider table is on charlotte mason curriculum comparison. AO versus Alveary is a separate pair: amblesideonline vs alveary. Listings: charlotte mason schools by state.
Who each one is for
Choose AO if you can assemble books, want zero curriculum fee, and will protect narration without a script. Choose SCM if you want the script, will pay for picture study and music kits, and have more than one age at the table for history and enrichment.
A family that already owns AO books can try SCM enrichment for one year without throwing the AO history stream away. Mixing vendors is extra coordination. It is allowed.
Neither product replaces a trained teacher in a school. If you want a campus, look at listings rather than another shopping cart.
AO's restrictions on group use are published. SCM's co-op line is a product you purchase. Those are different answers to the same gathering-day problem.
