Middle Ages book list for Simply Charlotte Mason
A Pageant of History: Middle Ages uses A Castle with Many Rooms as the family spine. Macaulay's Castle and Cathedral are the visual pair. Reformation-era living books sit in this volume, not in a separate year.
What SCM sells
A Pageant of History: Middle Ages and A Castle with Many Rooms are the paid core. A Book of Centuries stays on the table all four years.
Castle and Cathedral are library books for most families. Otto of the Silver Hand is public domain. Adam of the Road is a library hold. Ivanhoe is public domain for older students.
Church history
SCM weaves church history through the Pageant volumes rather than selling a fifth track. If your family wants more Reformation narrative, add a living biography and keep the narration standard. Do not add a second textbook.
See charlotte mason living books for substitutions. See charlotte mason curriculum comparison if you are still choosing a vendor.
Reading load and substitutions
Castle and Cathedral can be looked at, not finished. One chapter of Macaulay plus a narration is a week.
Ivanhoe is long. Older students can narrate selected episodes. You are not failing the year if you stop at the tournament.
The Bible Smuggler is grades 1–8 on SCM's own note. Older students can skip it without a replacement textbook.
A second Reformation spine is optional. One living biography of Luther or Tyndale is enough beside Lambert. Shipping $129; returns 60 days (checked 2026-09-06).
Cathedral stonework is a handicraft rabbit trail. Keep it to one afternoon, not a new curriculum.
If your co-op already does a medieval fair, use those weeks as narration of the same spine. Do not buy a fair-in-a-box on top of Pageant.
Serfs and saints are people. Narrate them. A castle unit with no living book is a craft week, not history. Keep the Lambert spine open. The Pageant maps are included with the teacher guide; do not buy a third atlas.
