Ancient Rome book list for Simply Charlotte Mason

The SCM core

Same teacher guide as Egypt and Greece: A Pageant of History: Ancient Times. Same combined spine: On the Edge of the Great Sea. You do not buy a third history guide to add Rome in the current catalogue.

Detectives in Togas and Macaulay's City are library books. The Aeneid and Tacitus are public domain. That is the bill if you already own the teacher guide.

Forms and pacing

A family doing Ancient Times in one year will not give Rome a full former SCM year. The Pageant volume covers the Mediterranean as one stream. If you want a Rome-heavy year, lengthen the Roman chapters and cut Egypt repeats on a second cycle.

Reading load and substitutions

Latin is not required to narrate Rome. A grammar program is a skill subject; add it only if you already planned to.

Macaulay's City is a looking book. Spread it across weeks. It is not a one-sitting read-aloud.

Detectives in Togas is mystery first, history second. That is allowed. Living books can be stories.

If Latin is already in your Individual Studies, do not add a second Latin book because this is the Rome year. One skill track is enough.

The Forum is a place. Put it in the Book of Centuries with a date, then go outside. History is not a coloring sheet.
